Hirakud Dam is one of the world's longest dams.

It is the world's longest earthen dam, measuring approximately 16 miles or 26 kilometers in length.

The project was launched in 1937, with efforts beginning in 1937.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru led the first lot of concrete on April 12, 1948,  

The entire project was then formally inaugurated on January 13, 1957, by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

The Hirakud Dam is also Asia's longest, measuring approximately 25.8 kilometers in length.
